Ecology is the scientific discipline exploring the relationship of living things to their environments. As a landscape ecologist, I was taught to read the natural world; In landscape painting, I work to translate that story.
Everything speaks in its own language - mountains, trees, people. Through observation, we learn to communicate and from there, we can grow together. My paintings linger on those moments of observation and the blurred boundaries navigating between ourselves, others, and the world: How do we inhabit space? How does it, in turn, inhabit us? What is the "self" other than an impression of constantly changing external environments?
I address ecological themes both overtly and through the subtle interactions between people, centering on human relationships as the basis for building non-human ones. I position the viewer in first person, often face to face with a figure, whose relationship to them is unclear - and in searching for answers, they turn to the outward for context. Through impressionistic use of color, I superimpose an emotional landscape onto a physical one; often, I overlay surreal elements to visualize internal experiences or abstract concepts. This tension of familiarity hopefully causes viewers to pause, and in that moment of confusion, they approach the world with the intention to listen to the unique way it speaks to and through us.
